Feeling Overwhelmed? Take Care of Yourself First.

We know that grief is deeply personal, and creating something about your experiences can sometimes feel intense. If you ever feel overwhelmed while thinking about or working on your submission, it’s completely okay to pause or stop. Your well-being always comes first.

Here are some steps you can take if things feel too heavy:

  • Take a Break: Do something that helps you relax or feel safe—maybe listening to music, drawing, going outside, or chatting with someone you trust.
     

  • Go for a Walk: Fresh air and movement can help clear your mind and ease strong emotions.
     

  • Cuddle Your Pet or a Favourite Toy: Physical comfort can be soothing, whether it’s from a pet, a soft toy, or a blanket.
     

  • Breathe: Try breathing in slowly for 4 counts, holding for 4, and breathing out for 4. It can help calm your mind.
     

  • Reach Out: You don’t have to cope on your own. Talking to someone can really help.

  • Childline (for under 19s): Call 0800 1111 or visit childline.org.uk – Free, confidential support, available 24/7. Support for anything children are going through.
     

  • Samaritans: Call 116 123 or visit samaritans.org – Available 24/7, for anyone who needs to talk about what you are going through.
     

  • Shout: Text SHOUT to 85258 – A free, confidential text service available 24/7 for anyone in crisis.
     

  • Grief Encounter: Call 0808 802 0111 or visit griefencounter.org.uk – Offers support to young people and families experiencing grief.
     

  • Winston’s Wish: Call 08088 020 021 or visit winstonswish.org – Support for grieving children and young people.
     

  • The Mix (for under 25s): Call 0808 808 4994 or visit themix.org.uk – Support for any issue, open daily.
     

There’s no rush to finish your submission in one go. You can take your time, or leave it for another day. Just looking after yourself is enough.
